This project
was a response to the needs of the local community for sheltered
housing and provided secure private accommodation with a balanced
mix of indoor and outdoor semi-public spaces.
The site,
previously used for light industrial works, is located on the
edge of a residential area in north Belfast and is surrounded
by two storey semi detached dwellings to the south and west,
with schools and playing fields to the north and east.
The scheme,
completed in April 1997, comprises 28 dwelling units and features
a central mall area providing circulation to dwellings
and enabling residents to access the south facing terrace.
Comfortable modern amenities are provided in a variety of dwelling
units, some of which are designed for the disabled. Various elements such as
corner windows, bay windows, feature windows and window seats are incorporated in the design to create individuality for each dwelling.
The central mall,
with dwellings on either side, varies in width and is designed
to provide views out, as well as allowing penetration of natural light
into this central space. Internal colours and materials are light
and soft with the external buff facing brick and blue brick highlights
extending internally to stairwells and lobbies, to diffuse the segregation of internal and external space.
